🌐 Quote shown in the original Greek — English translation below

157. There is another who gives alms to escape from hell. He does it for his own soul; he acts "according to God," yet he does not do exactly as God wishes. He is still in the state of a servant.

For the servant does not do the will of his Lord because he himself wants it, but because he fears he might be punished.

And this person also gives alms in the same way to escape from hell, and God saves him from it.

Another gives alms to receive a reward. This purpose is higher than the first, but even this is not yet exactly as God wishes.

For he is not yet, in terms of mental disposition, in the state of a son. Just as a hired laborer does not do the will of his master, but only to receive wages and profit from him, so too does this person give alms to receive a reward.

For there are three types of mental dispositions that lead us to do good, as St. Basil the Great says. I believe I have told you about these before.

We do good either because we fear hell, and thus we are in the state of a servant; or to receive a reward, and we are in the state of a hired laborer; or for the sake of the good itself, and then we are in the state of a son.

For the son does not do the will of his father out of fear, nor because he wants to receive a reward from him, but because he wants to serve him, to honor him, and to bring him rest.

And we too must give alms for the sake of the virtue itself, participating in the difficulties of others as if they were members of our own body. Let us serve someone as if we ourselves were enjoying the fruit of our service.

Let us give as if we were the ones receiving. This is almsgiving done with awareness. Thus, as we have said, we find ourselves in the mental state of a son.
