Dormition Fast

Translation of the relics of Saint Stephen the Deacon, Protomartyr, from Jerusalem to Constantinople (in 428); Saint Auspice, first Bishop of Apt (1st century); Saint Stephen, Pope of Rome, Confessor (257); Saints Friard and Secondelle, hermits in the diocese of Nantes (6th century); Saint Basil, the Fool in Christ, of Moscow (1557); Saint Basil of Kubensk (15th century); Saint Berthaire, Bishop of Chartres (around 623); the monk-martyr Platon Kolegov (1937).

TRANSLATION OF THE RELICS OF SAINT STEPHEN [1]

After the stoning of Saint Stephen by the Jews [Dec 27], Gamaliel, the teacher of Saint Paul in the study of the Law, but who, convinced by the miracles of the Lord, had been baptized by the Apostles, encouraged certain other Christians to accompany him to seize the body of the First Martyr, which had been abandoned on the roadside, and to bury it in Caphargamala, a property belonging to him, about twenty miles from the Holy City. Once the forty days of mourning were completed, Nicodemus, the nocturnal disciple of the Lord (Jn 3:2), who had narrowly escaped the persecution triggered in Jerusalem, reached the village of Gamaliel, who was his uncle, and asked him for refuge. He died from his wounds a few days later and was buried alongside Saint Stephen. Gamaliel and his twenty-year-old son, Habib, who had also been baptized by the Apostles, were not long behind him in death. Many years later, while these graves had fallen into oblivion, Lucien, a pious and venerable priest of the village of Caphargamala, saw Saint Stephen appear to him on three occasions. The saint was dressed in the linen sticharion of deacons, upon which his name was embroidered in red and gold letters. His head covered by long white hair, he wore golden sandals and held a golden staff in his hand, with which he lightly struck Lucien, calling him by his name. He ordered him to warn the Bishop of Jerusalem, John, and to proceed with the discovery of his relics, so that God might perform many miracles through them. Lucien immediately went to warn Bishop John, who commanded him to dig at the place indicated by the saint, where there was a pile of stones. That same night, Saint Stephen appeared to Lucien again to reveal that this pile was merely a memorial erected during his funeral, and that he should look for his grave a little further north. After digging in great haste, a stone slab was discovered, on which the names of Stephen, Nicodemus, and Habib were inscribed in Hebrew letters. Immediately, the earth trembled and a sweet fragrance spread around, accomplishing seventy-three healings. And angelic voices could be heard singing: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill to men. Bishop John, who was then presiding over a synod in Lydda (Diospolis), went to the site, assisted by two other bishops, to recognize the body of the First Martyr, and he transferred it to the Church of Holy Sion in Jerusalem on December 26, 415. An abundant rain then came to end the drought that had long afflicted Palestine. It is said that some time later, the widow of the founder of the church in which the relic of Saint Stephen had been deposited wanted to transport her husband's remains to Constantinople. But, because of the resemblance of the two sarcophagi, it was the saint's relic that she took away. All along the way, miracles multiplied in her passage, and when the ship reached the port of Chalcedon, the demons hidden in the waves cried out that an unbearable fire was tormenting them. When the ship docked, the sarcophagus was placed on a cart pulled by mules. But the animals suddenly stopped at a place named Constantianes, and one of them even took a human voice to declare that the saint's body must be laid there. No matter how many other mules were harnessed, it was impossible to move the cart. The precious remains were therefore deposited, on August 2, in this place where a church in honor of the saint First Martyr was subsequently built.

TROPARIA AND KONTAKIA OF THE DAY

Troparion of Saint Stephen, Tone 4

On your brow you received the royal diadem because of the sufferings endured for Christ our God, the first to fight among the Martyrs; you confounded the assembly of the impious, at the right hand of the Father you saw the Savior. Ceaselessly pray to Him that our souls may be saved.

Kontakion of Saint Stephen, Tone 6

First on earth sown by the heavenly Gardener, first on earth you poured out, blessed Stephen, your blood for Christ; first, in heaven you clasped by His hand the diadem of victors as the eldest of the crowned Athletes, the first to fight among the Martyrs.

EPISTLE OF THE DAY

1 Cor. 1:3-9

Grace and peace be given to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! I give thanks to my God continually on your behalf, for the grace of God that was granted to you in Jesus Christ. For in Him you have been enriched with all wisdom and knowledge, the testimony of Christ having been firmly established among you, so that you lack no gift, as you wait for the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also confirm you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, He who has called you into the communion of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Acts 6:8-7:5, 47-60 (St. Stephen)

In those days Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing wonders and great miracles among the people. Some members of the synagogue called the Freedmen, as well as those of the Cyrenians and the Alexandrians, and Jews from Cyrene and Asia, began to argue with him; but they could not resist the wisdom with which he spoke and the Spirit by which he spoke. Then they bribed men to say: "We have heard him utter blasphemous words against Moses and against God." They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and, seizing him, they dragged him off to the Sanhedrin. They produced false witnesses who said: "This man never stops uttering blasphemous statements against this holy place and the law; for we have heard him say that this place and the law that Moses gave us should be destroyed." All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin fixed their eyes on Stephen, and his face looked like that of an angel. The high priest said: "Is this so?" Stephen replied: "Men, brothers, fathers, listen! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran; and He said to him: 'Leave your country and your kindred, and go to the land that I will show you.' So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. From there, after his father died, God brought him to this land that you now inhabit; He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough to set his foot, yet He promised to give it to him and to his descendants after him, although he had no children. It was Solomon who built a house for God. But the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands, as the prophet says: 'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what will be the place of my rest? Is it not my hand that made all these things?...' You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors were, so are you. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now handed over and of whom you were murderers, you who received the law through the ministry of angels but have not kept it!" Hearing this, they were furious in their hearts and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looking up to heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said: "Look, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." Then they covered their ears, raised a great shout, and rushed upon him, dragging him out of the city to stone him. The witnesses laid their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he was praying and saying: "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" Then, kneeling down, he cried out with a loud voice: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them!" And after these words, he fell asleep.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

Matt. 19:3-12

Pharisees came to him to test him, asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?" He answered, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." They said to him, "Why then did Moses command that a certificate of divorce be given and that she be divorced?" He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. But I tell you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery. His disciples said to him, 'If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not advantageous to marry.' He said to them, "Not everyone can accept this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been so by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to accept this accept it."

Matt. 21:33-42 (St. Stephen)

For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to rent a vineyard. He made an agreement with the tenants for a denarius a day, and put them into his vineyard. He went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, "You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is right." So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and about the ninth hour, and did the same. After going out about the eleventh hour, he found others standing in the marketplace, and said to them, "Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?" They said, "Because no one has hired us." He said to them, "You also go into my vineyard." When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, "Call the tenants, and pay them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first." Those hired at the eleventh hour came, and each received a denarius. When the first came, they thought they would receive more; but they also received a denarius. And upon receiving it, they began to grumble against the landowner, saying, "These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat." But he answered one of them, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go your way; I want to give this last as much as I gave you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am kind?" Thus the last will be first, and the first will be last.
