SAINT MYRON, PRIEST MARTYR[1]

During the persecution of Decius (around 250), the governor of Achaia, Antipater, one day burst into the church where Christians were celebrating the feast of the Nativity, with the aim of arresting those who were most prominent and forcing them through torture to sacrifice to the gods of the Empire. Myron, a priest loved by all for his gentleness and nobility, and who had once been a friend of Antipater, rushed toward the magistrate and inveighed against him violently. He then turned to the faithful and exhorted them to remain firm on the rock of faith, trusting that Christ would grant them not only the courage to resist tyrants, but also access to the Kingdom of Heaven. Furious, Antipater withdrew, giving the order to arrest the saint, whom he then summoned to appear before him at the forum located near the temple of Dionysus (Bacchus). As the magistrate summoned him to sacrifice to this god, Myron replied that he recognized only the Almighty God who sits in the heavens as his sole sovereign. He was stretched on a rack to be flayed alive; but, overcoming the suffering, the saint sang psalms and repeated: "I am a Christian, I will not sacrifice!" The governor then had him thrown into a blazing furnace, whose flames rose more than fifty cubits high. Covered by grace, the valiant martyr suffered no burns and cried out: "We have passed through fire and through water, then You led us to the place of refreshment" (Ps 65, 12). At his prayer, the flame spread outward and reduced to ashes one hundred and fifty idolaters who were standing there. The governor fled, shouting to his guards to bring the saint back to prison. When evening came, after consulting with his advisors, Antipater had the martyr brought to the agora. At first, he could not recognize him because his face was so bright with light, but after Myron assured him that it was indeed him, Antipater condemned him to have all his skin cut into strips. While the executioners cut his flesh from shoulders to feet, the valiant martyr sang: "I have earnestly waited for the Lord and He has attended to me..." (Ps 39, 1). Then, taking a strip of bloody skin in his hand, he threw it at the tyrant's face and said: "Impious one, you delight in this spectacle. Know, however, that I endure these torments with ease because of the hope I cherish. As for you, you will gain nothing but eternal punishment..." The executioners strove to redouble his sufferings, but the saint remained imperturbable, his gaze fixed toward heaven. In response to his prayer, a voice was heard from among all the onlookers, saying: "Your struggle will soon end. A throne is prepared for you in the heavens." Brought back to prison, Myron was then thrown to the beasts in the amphitheater. Armed with the sign of the Cross, he stood before the wild animals, which did not dare approach him and respected him like Adam before the fall. An untamed lioness having been released against him, she came to prostrate herself at his feet and cut his bonds with her fangs. She then took on a human voice to announce to the magistrate his approaching end, while the people raised great cries of admiration. Antipater, seized with panic before so many wonders, then took his own life. Saint Myron was then transferred to Cyzicus, where, after showing the governor his unshakable trust in God, he was beheaded.

TROPARIA AND KONTAKIA OF THE DAY

Troparion of the Dormition, Tone 1

In childbirth, You preserved virginity; in Your falling asleep, You did not abandon the world, O Mother of God. You were transferred to Life, being the Mother of Life, and through Your prayers, You deliver our souls from death.

Troparion of the Holy Martyr, Tone 4

Your Martyr, Lord, for the struggle he waged * has received from You, our God, the crown of immortality; * animated by Your strength, he has defeated the tyrants * and reduced the audacity of the demons to impotence; * through his prayers, save our souls, O Christ our God.

Kontakion of the Holy Martyr, Tone 2:

From childhood having shown your love for Christ and kept His divine commandments, toward Him with all your heart you have ascended, Saint Myron, to find rest in Him; glorifying Him with the Angels in heaven, for all men you implore divine remission.

Kontakion of the Dormition, Tone 2

Tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God, always vigilant in her intercessions, unshakable hope in her protection, for being the Mother of Life, He transferred her to Life, He who remained in His ever-virgin womb.

EPISTLE OF THE DAY

II Cor. V, 10-15

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive according to the good or evil he has done while in his body. Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we seek to persuade men; God knows us, and I hope that in your consciences you know us also. We do not commend ourselves to you again; but we give you occasion to glory in us, so that you may answer those who glory in appearances and not in the heart. For if I am out of my mind, it is for God; if I am of sound mind, it is for you. For the love of Christ compels us, because we consider that if one died for all, then all died; and He died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again for them.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

Mc I, 9-15 At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As He was coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. And a voice was heard from the heavens saying: You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased. Immediately the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, where He spent forty days, tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels served Him. After John had been delivered up, Jesus went into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of God. He was saying: The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the good news.
