August 17th – Feast Day Today: Saint Myron - Step of Orthodoxy

Feast Day Today: Our Church honors the memory of Saint Myron today, August 17th. Saint Myron was martyred during the reign of Emperor Decius in 250 AD. Coming from a wealthy family, he could have lived comfortably with all the earthly goods he desired.

However, his great love for Christ led Myron to be ordained a Priest. He was thus completely dedicated to his pastoral duty, teaching, admonishing, and helping every member of his flock. He cared daily for the poor, the widows, and the orphans.

At one time, the governor of Achaia, Antipater, went to the place where Myron was ministering and arrested many Christians. To blackmail Myron into apostasy, he brought his flock before him and told him that if he denied Christ, he would set them all free.

Myron smiled and replied: "If it were for the salvation of my spiritual children, I would willingly give my life. But that is not the case now. Let them themselves provide the answer."

Then they all shouted together: "No. A human soul is incomparably more precious than myriads of bodies and the whole world. Who among us wants to accept, so that our spiritual father might lose his soul, just so our own flesh might live a little longer in this transient world?".

The governor, enraged by the answer, after torturing Myron in a horrific manner, finally beheaded him.
