Peace Behind Locked Doors: The Risen Christ and the Breath of New Creation (John 20:19–23)

… These events were too much for any normal person to take in.

Why, then, does John emphasize “that day“?4 He is doing more than supplying a date on a calendar. Earlier in the Gospel, Jesus had prepared his disciples for the sorrow that lay ahead. The crucifixion of their teacher would shatter their world. Yet Jesus also made them a solemn promise, one they could not possibly understand until Easter:

In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. (John 14:20)

That promised day has dawned. But the disciples are utterly unprepared for it. They hunker down behind locked doors. They imagine they are safe from the Judeans. They are not safe from Jesus. Without warning, he stands in their midst. The experience is terrifying. His first words are simple, yet both necessary and comforting: “Peace to you.” We hear echoes of God’s fearful encounter with Gideon:5
