The one standing before them is both familiar and utterly unexpected. Jesus appears where no one expected him. The crucified Jesus is alive, yet alive in a way that transcends ordinary categories of presence and absence.

“Peace” was a familiar Jewish blessing, but on the lips of the risen Lord, it becomes something more. Jesus had already promised this peace on the night before his death: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (14:27). He had also promised, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world” (16:33). The disciples had heard those words before. Now they hear them again from the lips of the one who has passed through death and emerged victorious.

Yet his greeting alone does not produce instant recognition. Jesus, therefore, shows them his hands and his side. He shows them …
