EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas is preparing to propose a significant expansion of sanctions against Russian entities over the war in Ukraine, according to remarks published by the German newspaper Die Welt.
Kallas said the measures she intends to propose this autumn would constitute the European Union’s most ambitious sanctions list since the beginning of the war.
“For this autumn, I am proposing the most ambitious sanctions list since the start of the war. Once adopted, these measures will immediately increase the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by one third,” the 49-year-old former Estonian prime minister told Die Welt.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission also argued that the sanctions imposed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 have already inflicted substantial economic costs on Moscow.
