According to the analyst, the country’s Christian minority has faced severe persecution since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Unlike during their first period of rule in the 1990s, when militants publicly executed Christians who refused to renounce their faith and dumped women’s bodies into rivers, the current leadership is attempting to present itself as more moderate in pursuit of international recognition. Yet the underlying threat to Christian communities remains acute.
A particular danger comes from Taliban’s apostasy law, which states that a sane adult male who converts from Islam will be given three days to “repent” or face execution. Women who commit the same crime are to be held in prison for life and subject to regular beatings. Children will be held until they reach maturity, at which point they will face the relevant punishment.
“Christians are uniquely vulnerable because, unlike other religious minorities, their existence was never acknowledged by any of the Western-backed governments that existed between the Taliban being ousted in 2001 and their return in 2021," Martin Parsons said.
He added that this fact has allowed the Taliban "to deny the existence of Afghan Christians and treat any they find as apostates from Islam, even though many are actually second or third generation Christians.”
For now, the main factor restraining mass killings is division within the Taliban leadership itself. Some more moderate figures are temporarily delaying the strict enforcement of such punishments so as not to undermine prospects for Western recognition, while local appeals courts sometimes commute death sentences to prison terms.
Nevertheless, detailed records of Christians continue to be compiled in Afghanistan, including their names, contact information, and home addresses.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Taliban had introduced life imprisonment for women in Afghanistan who renounce Islam.
