There comes a moment in every person’s life when he is entrusted with some measure of authority. This does not necessarily mean political power or a formal position of leadership. Authority exists wherever one person exercises influence over another—in the family, in friendship, in the workplace, and, of course, in the spiritual life. The ability to guide, direct, and even instruct others seems entirely natural. Yet it is precisely here that we encounter the fine line separating what builds up from what destroys.

In his First Epistle to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul utters words that reveal the very heartbeat of the Christian life: Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ (1 Cor. 9:12).

To appreciate the full weight and grandeur of this statement, we must consider the situation in the Corinthian Church. Into that community had come teachers who asserted their authority through power and domination. In the ancient world, this was considered perfectly normal. People were accustomed to the strong ruling over the weak, and those possessing knowledge or status often turned these gifts into instruments of control. Such teachers offered the Corinthians a familiar, though rigid, hierarchy—here is the master, and here is the subordinate.

Against this dark backdrop, the Apostle Paul reminds them of his true standing. He was the one who had founded the Corinthian Church. He was the one through whom they had first come to know Christ. By every human and spiritual measure, Paul possessed a greater claim to authority and respect than any of the itinerant preachers who had arrived afterward. He could have insisted upon his rights. He could have demanded obedience. Instead, he freely chose another path. Paul renounced his legitimate privileges. He earned his living by the work of his own hands, endured hardship, and refused to dominate others.

Why? His answer is striking in its simplicity: Lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

Here Paul reveals one of the most profound laws of the spiritual life: outward domination of one person over another is fundamentally incompatible with the preaching of the Cross. Wherever a shepherd or teacher begins to assert his own importance, to bend others to his will, or to manipulate souls, the Gospel falls silent.

The true proclamation of Christ is the proclamation of the God who humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross (Phil. 2:8). He does not violate human freedom but patiently seeks a loving response from the human heart.

Whenever human authority replaces Christ at the center of the community, the Gospel degenerates into ideology, and faith becomes merely a system of control. Human domination inevitably drives out the Holy Spirit, for where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Cor. 3:17). Compulsion and manipulation may produce an obedient community, but they can never bring forth free sons and daughters of God.

The Apostle Paul understood the essential truth: genuine spiritual strength lies not in the ability to subdue others but in the willingness to step aside and make room for God. To renounce one’s own authority for the sake of another person’s freedom is the truest imitation of Christ.

This lesson is addressed not only to clergy and theologians but to every one of us. It speaks to parents who are tempted to build their relationship with their children upon unquestioning obedience instead of revealing to them the beauty of love. It speaks to leaders and mentors who forget that their chief calling is to foster the growth of those entrusted to them rather than to assert their own importance. It speaks to every Christian who, in arguments about the faith, seeks to overpower an opponent through superior reasoning or an air of spiritual superiority.

The Word of God calls us to reconsider our very understanding of strength. True authority—in the Church as in life—is never won through pressure. It is born of self-sacrifice, a willingness to endure inconvenience, and a sincere reverence for another person’s soul.

May the Apostle Paul’s words become the constant measure of our own intentions. Whenever we find ourselves in a position to exercise authority, to exert pressure, or to prevail over another, let us ask ourselves one simple question: Are we, by doing so, placing an obstacle in the way of Christ?

And may the Lord grant us the wisdom always to choose not the path of domination, but the path of love, humility, and service.
