🌐 Quote shown in the original Greek — English translation below

Timothy of Thessaly: 'The Virgin Mary is our Mother' – The power of her intercession and the path to salvation - Step of Orthodoxy

Timothy of Thessaly: With a deeply theological and simultaneously pastoral discourse, His Eminence the Metropolitan of Thessaly and Fanariotissa, Mr. Timothy, referred to the position of the Most Holy Theotokos in the life of the Church, the power of her intercession, and the essential relationship that every believer is called to have with Christ.

On the evening of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, His Eminence presided over the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Muzaki, during the service of Vespers and the Holy Supplication to the Panagia.

The service had a special liturgical character, as the Vespers of the Occasion of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord was celebrated, followed by the Supplication to the Most Holy Theotokos, a few days before the great feast of her Dormition.

In his sermon, Metropolitan Timothy developed the meaning of the intercession of the Panagia and the Saints, clarifying that Jesus Christ is always at the center of faith and salvation.

As he pointed out, Christ is the only true Mediator between God and humans, because He is simultaneously perfect God and perfect man. Through His Incarnation, He took on human nature and fully entered into the reality of man, without ceasing to be God.

Within this mystery, he emphasized, the distinct position of the Theotokos is also revealed.

The Panagia was not a passive figure in the plan of the divine economy. With her free consent to the will of God and with her "behold the handmaid of the Lord," she offered her entire existence so that the mystery of the Incarnation could be realized.

For this reason, the Church honors her as the Mother of the Lord and also, by grace, as the Mother of all Christians.

Why the faithful seek the intercession of the Panagia

His Eminence explained that the intercession of the Theotokos does not operate independently of God, but constitutes a gift of divine grace.

The faithful, therefore, do not rush to the Panagia by setting Christ aside. On the contrary, through the Theotokos and the Saints, they are led even more towards Him.

This constitutes a central element of Orthodox spirituality, as expressed in the worship and life of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaly and Fanariotissa.

Metropolitan Timothy also dwelled on the fact that the Panagia, during the Annunciation, did not reject the Angel's message. She asked with humility how the event would take place, but remained fully open to the will of God.

This obedience made her a model of faith, trust, and complete devotion.

Not only in difficult moments

His Eminence's pastoral emphasis was also special in that the relationship with the Panagia and the Church cannot be limited to moments of need.

Prayer, confession, participation in the Mysteries, faith, and the spiritual struggle are not occasional acts, but a way of life.

Man, he emphasized, is called to live steadily within the Church and to build his relationship with Christ daily.

Shortly before the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the message of the Metropolitan of Thessaly acquires particular weight: the Panagia remains the Mother who intercedes, but also the model that shows the believer the path of obedience, faith, and ultimately salvation in Christ.
