Απόδοση της εορτής της Μεταμορφώσεως - Pemptousia

🌐 Quote shown in the original Greek — English translation below

The Feast of the Transfiguration - Pemptousia

Jesus on Mount Tabor, before the astonished eyes of His three Disciples, “was transfigured before them; His face shone like the sun and His garments became white as the light” (Matt. 17:2). The Disciples were accustomed to seeing their Teacher as a simple man. For the first time, they see Him within the brilliant light, His trans-cosmic light radiating like another sun. Their astonishment was great, and even greater when they saw the Prophets Moses and Elijah appearing beside Jesus, conversing with Him, and confirming through their presence that Jesus is the Messiah, whose coming into the world as Savior they had foretold centuries before. And the amazement of the Disciples culminated when, through a bright cloud that covered them, they heard the voice of God the Father telling them: “This is my beloved Son, this is my chosen one; listen to Him” (Matt. 17:5).

The Transfiguration, as the hymns of the Church explain, occurred to strengthen the Lord's Disciples and to establish their faith in Him, so that they would not be scandalized or discouraged when they later saw Him undergoing horrific sufferings and dying upon the Cross! Thus, He protected them from despair and gave them the strength, later during their apostolic journeys to the nations, to proclaim with arguments that Jesus is the true God. Later, Peter, in his Second Epistle, refers emphatically to the event of the Lord's Transfiguration, regarding what he saw and heard, and affirms: “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received honor from God the Father when that glorious voice was sounded to Him from the well-pleasing Majesty: 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.' And this voice we ourselves heard, coming from heaven, while we were with Him on the holy mountain” (2 Pet. 1:16-18).

It must be emphasized here that, during His Transfiguration, the Lord revealed—to the extent of His Disciples' capabilities—His divine Glory, which He always possesses as God. As we know from Holy Scripture, God said to Moses: “…it is not possible that man should see Me and live” (Exod. 33:20). The glory of God is inconceivable; from this divine Glory, the Lord allowed a small part to be seen by His three Disciples as divine light, as much as they were able to endure.

As we chant in the Divine Liturgy, God is “the True Light”; this trans-cosmic light has nothing to do with the natural light of the sun. The Evangelists note that He shone “like the sun” because they had no other measure of comparison to show how powerful the light was that radiated from the face of Christ. Thus, they indicated that the Light of the Transfiguration is different from the created light of the sun. The divine light is “uncreated,” as the Fathers characterize it; meaning it was not created like other kinds of light, but is eternal, like God, continuous, and supra-temporal.

At that moment, the Lord manifested His Grace through His incorruptible Body, thus showing that the Glory of His human nature surrounds also His Church, since, according to the Apostle Paul, the Church is the Body of Christ. Furthermore, the faithful, who are members of this Body of the Lord, partake in the divine glory and the Grace of God, just like the two Prophets and the three Disciples who were within the bright cloud (v. 5).

Jesus' conversation, during the hour of the divine Transfiguration, with the two Prophets regarding the Crucifixion death that He would soon undergo, reveals the close relationship between these two events. And their common characteristic is glory. Christ showed His glory not only on Tabor but also on Golgotha, as paradoxical as that may seem to us! Jesus Himself said this on that night before He was arrested and crucified: “Now is the time when the Son of Man is glorified, and God the Father is glorified in Him” (John 13:31).

Similarly, the faithful, in the time they suffer, undergoing tribulations and persecutions, through their patience and endurance, partake in the sufferings of Christ, and glorify God and are glorified by God. When the Lord foretold to Peter how he would end his life, the Evangelist explains: “He said this to show by what kind of death Peter would glorify God” (John 21:19).

The Transfiguration of the Lord is a support, a consolation, a hope, and a life for man. Just as the Disciples were strengthened, in the same way, the people of every age receive strength from heaven to endure the agony of their crucified lives. When a tested person flees in faith to the Almighty Lord, they feel their heart soften, their soul find relief, their thoughts be enlightened, and their inner world be filled with courage, faith, patience, endurance, hope, and love.

Those who patiently take up their cross, alongside Christ, and proclaim with the thief, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom” (Luke 23:42), are certain—as the Lord confirms—that they “will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matt. 13:43). Amen.
