16:1 Then Job took up the discourse and said:

16:2 "I have heard many such things; you are all miserable comforters.

16:3 Do the words of the wind have any logic? Or what is it that troubles you, that you answer in this way?

16:4 If I were in your place, I too could speak; I would heap up arguments against you and shake my head mockingly.

16:5 I would have great strength in my mouth, and my lips would not hold back.

16:6 If I speak, the pain of my wound is not soothed; and if I remain silent, how much less am I wounded?

16:7 But now God has overwhelmed me, He has made me a target, and He has left me to rot.

16:8 He has seized me in His hands, and my afflictions have become a testimony against me. My friend has risen up against me with lies and has accused me outright.

16:9 With anger He has cast me down; He has gnashed His teeth against me, and the arrows of His marauders have fallen upon me.

16:10 He rushed at me with eyes flashing like spears; He struck me hard on the knees, and all together they attacked me.

16:11 Because the Lord has delivered me into the hands of the wicked and placed me among the ungodly.

16:12 While I lived in peace, He crushed me; He seized me by my hair, uprooted me, and set me as a target.

16:13 They surrounded me with spears; they pierced my kidneys and mercilessly poured my gall upon the earth.

16:14 They struck me blow upon blow, and they rushed upon me like mighty warriors.

16:15 They scraped my skin with a shovel, and my strength crumbled into the dust.

16:16 My flesh burns from my crying, and the shadow of death has fallen upon my eyelids.

16:17 Yet, my hands have done no wrong, and my prayer was pure.

16:18 O earth, do not cover the blood of my heart, and let there be no place where my cry will be stopped.

16:19 Even now, my witness is in the heavens, and He who knows my truth is on high.

16:20 May my prayer reach the Lord, and may my tears flow before Him.

16:21 If only man could be judged fairly before God, as a man is judged by his fellow human.

16:22 Therefore, my measured years have come to an end, and I shall take the path from which I shall never return."
