🌐 Quote shown in the original Greek — English translation below

For · the Lord
Sentiment: positive

The speaker exhorts the people to fear, serve, and obey the voice of the Lord.

August 20th – Feast Day Today: Prophet Samuel - Step of Orthodoxy

Feast Day Today: Our Church honors the memory of the Holy Prophet Samuel today, August 20th.

The Prophet Samuel was born in Ramathaim-Zophim on Mount Ephraim, from the tribe of Levi. He was the son of Elkanah and Hannah, who was barren and through prayer God granted her a child, Samuel, whom she dedicated to God to express her gratitude.

When Samuel grew up, he served the Lord and became a great prophet and a most righteous judge of the people. He anointed kings, Saul and David, prophesied for 40 years, and died in old age.

Let us, however, mention some of his edifying words, which he proclaimed to the people of Israel, but which also apply to the peoples of every age. He says: "If you will fear the Lord and serve Him, and hearken to His voice, and do not rebel against the Lord, both you and the king who reigns over you shall follow the Lord; but if you will not hearken to the voice of the Lord... then the hand of the Lord shall be against you and against your king" (1 Samuel 12:14-15).

That is to say, if you fear and respect the Lord, worship Him, obey His commandments, do not react against what the Lord commands you, and if you and the ruler who governs you steadily and consistently follow the path indicated by the Lord, I tell you everything will go well. You will have the blessing of the Lord. But if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord, then the heavy hand of the Lord will fall upon you and your ruler, and you will be punished.

Let us also note that the Prophet Samuel wrote 1 and 2 Samuel (in the Hebrew Bible, these two books are joined and bear his name). Furthermore, the horn of Samuel, which contained the oil with which David was anointed king, was located in Constantinople, in the monastery called Myriokeraton. Finally, let us mention that Samuel founded the mystical order of the Essenes.

Dismissal Hymn:

Tone 4. Tachys prokalabe.

From barrenness you blossomed, fruit of righteousness, manifesting the coming blessing to us, O Samuel the prophet, whom the Lord granted as a child, you anointed kings with divine oil. Now, remember those who celebrate you with blessed memory.
