Restoration workers in Moscow’s Kremlin uncovered last month the incorrupt relics of St. Dmitry Donskoy, the medieval Russian prince famed for his victory over the Golden Horde at the Battle of Kulikovo.
The discovery happened during emergency restoration work in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, where sinking floor slabs had put ancient tombs at risk of collapse. Workers dismantled brick tomb structures along the cathedral’s south wall in July 2026 and found three intact white-stone sarcophagi belonging to St. Dmitry Donskoy, his father Grand Prince Ivan Ivanovich the Fair, and Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Zhilka of Uglich, reports Patriarchia.ru.
The find upended what museum staff had believed about the burial arrangement for over 150 years. 19th-century records suggested St. Dmitry’s sarcophagus had been placed beneath his father’s to make room for heating pipes. Restorers now say that’s not what happened: during work in the 1860s, both sarcophagi were actually raised to floor level above their original burial pits, with workers partially dismantling the cathedral’s south wall to fit Ivan the Fair’s sarcophagus into a niche. Both saints stayed in their original spots the whole time.
The lid of St. Dmitry’s sarcophagus had two cracks running across it, with the center section in danger of caving in and damaging the remains inside. With Patriarch Kirill’s blessing, restoration specialists removed and repaired the cracked lid, reinforcing it with metal ties, and found the remains inside still dressed in burial vestments.
Archaeologists and anthropologists from the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Archaeology examined the remains and found them fully intact except for the left heel bone, with no signs of postmortem damage and some preserved soft tissue still in place. They determined the remains belonged to a man 35 to 45 years old at death, standing around 5 feet 11 inches—notably tall for the medieval period. The remains showed a large healed injury on the right side of the forehead sustained years before death, along with signs of heavy physical strain on the arm and chest muscles and early-stage arthritis in the knee. Researchers found no wounds that would have caused death, consistent with historical accounts that St. Dmitry died of natural causes at age 39.
Based on the historical record, the archaeological context, and the anthropological findings, Church authorities confirmed the remains as authentic.
